About John WardA native of San Mateo County, John got an early baptism in politics, walking precincts in his San Carlos neighborhood when he was in the 7th grade. He campaigned for Pete McCloskey in the special congressional election in 1967, following the death of long-time incumbent J.Arthur Younger during a time when Republicans controlled most of the legislative seats in San Mateo County. It was during that campaign that John met Rob Caughlan and David Oke, who later influenced him to run for the Board of Supevisors in 1974 and managed his campaign vs. two-term incumbent Bob St. Clair. John, a high school teacher, upset the former lineman for the 49ers who John is quick to remind everyone had a 5-9 win-loss record in their prior season while pointing out that timing is everything in politics!
